Welcome to

The Secretary's Office

The Secretary

Any questions relating to Bungay and Waveney Golf Club will be answered by John Lunniss, the Club Secretary, or if he is unavailable, the Club Administrator Tony Long can usually help.

Competition results, up to date news and the calendar will be posted on these pages on a regular basis. We now have a telephone system where you can check on Tee availability. A recorded message will advise you of any course or tee closures for the day and if the course is closed due to bad weather when we will be carrying out an inspection. This can be obtained by dialling the Club telephone number and then following the instructions.

The Professional's page contains advice on playing the course and details of stock and special offers, while the Clubhouse page contains a Social Calendar. The idea is to encourage better use of the clubhouse this year and a varied programme of functions is being tried. Sunday lunches are available, so please keep an eye on the forthcoming events.

These pages are here to help us communicate with our members, potential members, societies and anyone with an interest in experiencing the warmth and friendliness of our superb Golf Club.

Ladies Hold on to the Rolling Pin

On Friday 30th April the annual match for the prestigious Rolling Pin was played. The Ladies being the holders were determined to defend their honour and the Vets were even more determined to regain the Rolling Pin.

The weather forecast was not good but all ladies prayed for good weather and the sun shone. The vets fielded a strong team, but at the last minute one of the ladies withdrew due to an injury. Ann Cunningham only made one call and that was to Mrs Joan Chilvers, who at the age of 80+, has been a member for well over 30 years, was Lady Captain in 1976 and Lady President in 1984 was delighted to help the ladies section out once again.

Joan partnered Mrs Val Hindle and beat their opponents Pat Linehan and Barry Pardue, helping the ladies to a victory of 6½ wins to 4½. 44 players then sat down to a hearty steak pie and the Vets are now planning their tactics to win back this most treasured of trophies!

Ladies County Weston Trophy

On Friday 23rd April 2004 Rookery Park played Bungay WV at Bungay in the Weston Trophy. All matches are played off scratch and players go out in handicap order.

The conditions for the day were beautiful, no wind and plenty of sunshine. One match went to the 19th after Heather Wright holes a 20' putt for birdie on the 18th green; she unfortunately lost on the 19th hole to Rachel Goldsmith.

All other matches finished before with a win to Liz Nichols against Marie Yapp 5 and 4. The next match to finish was a win to Rookery Rachel Goldsmith, beating Jackie Moore 5 and 4. Di Oliver beat Judy Taylor on the 17th 2 and 1, and Mary Pacy beat Jackie Hardiman 6 and 4.

This gave Bungay a 3 and 2 win which augers well for the rematch at Rookery on June 17th.

BUNGAY LADIES THROUGH TO THIRD ROUND OF
"MAIL ON SUNDAY"

Congratulations to the ladies who represented Bungay & Waveney Valley Golf Club in this prestigious national knock-out competition.

Fortunate to have a bye in the first round they were drawn away to Dereham in Round Two. The match was played last Sunday (14 March) in extremely difficult conditions. Not only was there a strong blustery wind but halfway through the afternoon there was a period of really heavy rain.

Special congratulations are due because Bungay were giving a total of 18 shots to Dereham over the four matches, not easy on an 'Away' course. Bungay will now hope for a 'Home' draw in Round 3. The match was won by 2 ½ - 1 ½.

Bungay names first:

Mrs. Liz Nicholls v. Mrs. Helen Burrage All square
Mrs. Jackie Moore v. Mrs. Elizabeth Bench Won 5 & 4
Mrs. Heather Wright v. Mrs. Mitzi Barnes Won 4 & 2
Mrs. Sally Mattocks v. Mrs. Carol Harrison Lost 2 & 1

DADS' ARMY STAGE AN ANNIVERSARY BATTLE
3rd March 2004

VETERANS of Bungay and Diss Golf Clubs met for the 18th year to decide who would hold a trophy in the shape of a wartime soldier's helmet.

The annual competition, staged each year on a home and away basis, was initiated after former Diss green keeper and Bungay club member Tony Skipper felt the veterans who regularly battled their way around the Diss course should have an incentive - thus the Tin Hat "war" against Bungay was born.

Holders Diss took the trophy to Bungay on Wednesday along with the Parks Trophy they won last year. But the tin hat - painted gold and mounted on a wooden stand - was won back by the Bungay side which handed out at 6 and a-half to 1 and-a half trouncing. Diss Seniors' captain Colin Wyer said it was usual to "lose" the Tin Hat at Bungay but reclaim it at the return fixture later in the year at Diss.

Golf historian John Barson said the Tin Hat Trophy was the forerunner of a successful series of inter-club seniors' and veterans' matches held throughout Norfolk and Suffolk.

Pictured below are the 16 men from each club before teeing off at Bungay.
